Staggered Start

We started off Kindergarten with an awesome Staggered Start day for everyone!

Each day was full of tons of fun from beginning to end. When we got to school, we explored with some toys on our table and then painted our hands for a handprint puzzle.  We then gathered on the rug to sing a song and read a book called "Pete the Cat; Rockin' in my School Shoes". When the story was over, a special note fell out of our book. We couldn't believe it but Pete the cat jumped out of our book and ran around our school! We decided we needed to go find him! We looked in the music room, the lunchroom, the gym (which we can't get into yet because it is full of furniture) and the library. Everywhere we went, Pete left us a special note as a clue to tell us where to go next. Finally, we ended up back in our classroom where Pete left us a delicious cookie to enjoy and a coloring paper to color.  We loved looking for Pete the Cat!!

After our snack and coloring our Pete the Cat paper, we went to Specials and met all of our teachers. We can't wait to go to Art, Music, P.E., Rosetta Stone and Makerspace this year.  After Specials, some of us got to go outside to play or draw with sidewalk chalk (if it wasn't raining). We can't wait for the weather to be nice so we can go play on the playground structures!

Then, we got to make Pete the Cat.  Mrs. Feller helped us cut and glue our Pete together.  We worked super hard on this project!  Then, Mrs. Deaton let us play in the Blocks Center while she called us over for some testing.  We had to tell her our colors, shapes, numbers, letters, sounds and lots of other things. She had us count as high as we could for her!  Branson and Zhaine already know how to count to 100.  How awesome!!

Lunch time was great! We learned that when our signal in the middle of our lunch table is turned to red, we have to be quiet and eat. We get to talk quietly when our teachers turn our signal to green. It was nice to talk to our new friends at lunch.

After lunch, we got to help Mrs Deaton make play dough.  We read the list of ingredients and the directions with Mrs. Deaton and then we made it.  It was so much fun!  After we made the play dough, we got to play with it.  We even got to play with some play dough toys.

At the end of the day, we learned all of the rules for the Free Centers in our classroom. Then, we got to play with all the new toys, which was awesome! We love Blocks, Puzzles and Games, Math and Housekeeping. One of our favorite things to do was play Family in the Housekeeping Center. Some of us wanted to read in Mrs. Deaton's cool reading fort, too! Free Centers are fun!

All day long we worked hard to learn our rules for inside the classroom and in our hallways. We know we are going to be South Superheroes this year.  We are going to make awesome choices, have a lot of fun and learn so much with Mrs. Deaton and Mrs. Feller.  We can't wait for a wonderful year in Kindergarten!

  1. Wow! Thanks for a wonderful update Mrs. Deaton. Scarlett can't wait to get back to school on Tuesday. She has told everyone we've seen about her awesome day at school. I can't wait to meet each and every smiling face I saw in this posting. Have a great Tuesday, Kindergartners!

  3. Thank you for this! I was so nervously awaiting this day. I knew this day would come and it did, too soon lol. This makes me feel so much better! I see all the smiles on their faces and it brings me back to when I was that age. Reese LOVES you and I couldn't have chosen a better woman to place my child in the care of even if I could have hand picked someone myself. You just have "a way" with kids. Thank you Mrs. Deaton for following the path of teaching, I truly believe it is what you were born to do!!! Now, the only worry I have is for next year, unless you become a first grade teacher haha. I look forward to having breakfast with you all at South Elementary in the morning!!! I hope to meet many of these smiling faces and the parents that are behind them!!! Thanks again!!!
