Important Things!

Welcome to Kindergarten!

Important Things To Know

Absences - If your child will be absent from school, please call the office at 704-658-2650 and leave a message with a secretary. Please make sure your child also has a written excuse for all absences. Please note— A Dojo message will NOT suffice as the excuse note.

Arrival - If your child will be eating breakfast at school, he/she should arrive at school before 8:35 a.m. The tardy bell rings at 8:45 a.m.

Blog- Our class will be blogging together as much as possible.  We hope you enjoy reading about the exciting things that happen in our Kindergarten class on a day to day basis! We will also add lots of pictures! Check it out at www.deatonkinders.blogspot.com.

Breakfast - Breakfast is available in the school cafeteria. The cost is $1.00. Students who plan to eat breakfast should arrive at school by 8:20 a.m.

Class DoJo - This year we will use Class Dojo to monitor behavior throughout the day.  Your child will be able to earn Dojo points for positive behavior and points will be deducted for negative behaviors.  You should find a classroom code within this packet to help you get signed-up with our classroom and school Dojo accounts.

Dismissal - School is dismissed at 3:30 p.m.  All kindergarten children who do not ride a bus will need to be picked up by an adult specified on the emergency card. The adult picking up the car rider will need the child’s specific car rider code.

Email - You may contact us at school via our email addresses: kitchdeaton@mgsd.k12.nc.us and tonyareynolds@mgsd.k12.nc.us.   We will try to respond to your emails as quickly as possible.  If you have an emergency or change of transportation, please call the school office at 704-658-2650 and leave a message for us.

Folders - Your child will have a take-home folder that will be sent home every Friday (we will send it home every day of the week until Reading Folders begin). All classwork will be sent home in this folder on Fridays. Please clean the folder out each weekend and send it back on Monday. Use the pouch in this take-home folder to send in snack money, lunch money or field trip money.

Illness - It is important to keep your child home if he/she is ill. This helps to make them more comfortable and prevents others from becoming ill. Your child must be fever-free and vomit-free for 24 hours before returning to school.

Lunch - The cost of lunch is $2.15 per day or $10.75 for the week.  The cafeteria has asked that you pay this on Mondays.  Checks can be made payable to South Cafeteria.  Lunch boxes are welcome and milk can be purchased for 50c. Please send money in the pouch we have provided in your child’s folder.  Also, please enclose a note and give us a breakdown of how the money is to be used.

Medicine – All medications must be administered through the office with a signed form from the doctor.  Teachers are not allowed to give students medicine (including cough drops).

Oops! - Please send a change of clothing for your child in the labeled ziplock bag. We will keep this change of clothing in your child’s cubby in case of an accident.

Reading Folders - Your child will have a blue reading folder that will go home daily (this will begin mid-September).  Please be sure to read with your child each night and sign the reading log.  Send the folder with the reading book and signed reading log back daily.

Snack/Activity Fund- Each day we have a short time for snack. The cost is $2.00 per week.  We ask that the money be sent in cash or checks made out to South Elementary School. To facilitate bookkeeping, we encourage you to pay monthly ($8), quarterly ($18), or yearly ($72). This money will also be used for special classroom projects throughout the year.  Please label the money in the pouch so we know it is not lunch money.

Transportation - If you plan to pick up a child that normally rides the bus, you must send a written note. If no written note is received, your child will be sent home by his/her usual method of transportation. You may also call the office if necessary.

Twitter - We hope to find time to tweet this year!! You can follow us— @DeatonKindersNC

Visitors - South has a policy that ALL GUESTS (including familiar faces) are required to check in at the office and wear a guest tag. South welcomes and encourages family involvement and the presence of a guest badge will help identify visitors to all staff.  It is important to remember that while this may seem inconvenient to frequent visitors, it is the goal and responsibility of the school to create a safe learning environment.
