Shaving Cream Writing

Today, Mrs. Deaton let us do a surprise writing activity.  We got to use shaving cream on our desks to practicing writing sight words, letters, names and math problems.  After we practiced for a little while, Mrs. Deaton let us have some free time.  We got to write anything we wanted or even draw some pictures.  We made a huge mess in our classroom.  We had to work hard to clean up all the shaving cream off our hands and off the tables.  The room smelled wonderful after we finished.  It smelled really clean! We could even smell the shaving cream after we came back inside from recess and from lunch.

We had such an awesome time doing this activity.  It was so much fun!

Butterflies!!!

We were so excited yesterday afternoon because Mrs. Deaton showed us our new class pet... WE GOT CATERPILLARS!!! We are talking about insects and their life cycles in Kindergarten. It is going to be really cool to watch a life cycle happen in front of our eyes.  We get to watch these adorable caterpillars form a chrysalis and then turn into beautiful Painted Lady butterflies.  Then, we get to set them free outside.

We have been reading a lot of caterpillar and butterfly books this week.  Some of the books are fiction and some of the books are nonfiction.  We also read the instruction manual that came with our caterpillars so we could learn a lot of good stuff.  Here are some things we have learned about our Painted Lady's...

"The five caterpillars are going to make a chrysalis in the cup." Gracie
"There is plenty of food inside the cup so we don't have to feed them." Myonna
"There is a silky web in the cup. The caterpillars can crawl all around." Abby
"The web in the cup means the caterpillars are growing good." Hanna
"The green balls in the cup are poop. Yuck!" Jatzibe

After the caterpillars form a chrysalis, Mrs. Deaton has to move them to our butterfly net.  She better be careful so they don't break! After the butterflies are born, we will feed them sugar water and then set them free.  We plan on having a butterfly release party on that day.  It is going to be really awesome!  Here are some other fun facts we have learned about Painted Lady Butterflies...

"Painted Ladys can lay up to 500 eggs." Levi
"The Painted Lady butterflies have 10,000 eyes." Paulina
"They eat with their feet.  That's funny." Wesley
"They breathe from their abdomen.  That's their bottom." Jazmin
"The butterflies will probably die after 4 weeks." Hanna

We can't wait to show you what our butterflies look like!!  Keep looking at our blog to find out!

Lazy 5 Ranch!!!

We went to Lazy 5 Ranch on a field trip yesterday.  It was an awesome, exciting, fun, epic day for us! First, we gathered in the classroom and changed our shirts.  We had to put on our lime green class t-shirts for the field trip.  After a quick picture in front of the SmartBoard, we loaded the bus for Lazy 5 Ranch.

We when arrived at Lazy 5 Ranch, we sat down for a snack of yummy fruit snacks.  Delicious! Then, we waited patiently on the benches for the wagon ride to begin. The wagon ride was such an awesome experience.  We saw a ton of animals and got to feed a lot of them.  Three horses pulled our wagon and we went really fast!  Here are some comments about our wagon ride:

"We got to feed the llamas. One was brown and white and the rest were just basic brown or black." Levi
"We did NOT feed the zebras because they would bite us." Jatzibe
"We saw a talking bird.  He said 'hi' to us!" Hanna
"We saw some black potbelly pigs with babies in their tummies." Paulina
"We got to feed a water buffalo.  We had to pour the food on his big tongue." Wesley
"We fed the giraffes." Ethan
"We saw the deer mom who had some babies." Jazmin
"We fed the baby goats and we fed the cows." Abby
"Some of us got to feed the emus. We had to hold the buckets out so the emus could eat out of the buckets.  They are not allowed to get the food out of our hands because they would peck us." Myonna
"We the horses went fast, we all put our hands up and said 'wheeee'!" Aaron
"We saw a white baby cow." Cecilia
"The rhino we saw is 20 years old." Ariana

After the wagon ride was over, we walked around the rest of Lazy 5 Ranch. We saw all kinds of other animals, such as lemurs, camels, goats, fish, peacocks and kangaroos.

The field trip was so much fun but it wasn't over yet!  We got to leave Lazy 5 Ranch and go to Edgemoor Park for some fun in the sun!  Right when we got to the park, we had a bathroom break and then ate lunch.  We ate at the picnic tables under the park shelter.  We were so excited when Mrs. Deaton said we could go play.  We played on the swings, slides, playground structure and in the grass.  A lot of us pretended we were police officers and captured the pretend bad guys.  Some of the girls played My Little Pony.

Levi's mommy came and brought his puppy dog named Chewie.  We all fell in love with Chewie and had a good time playing with her.

We walked back to the school from the park.  It was a long walk but Mrs. Deaton gave us water bottles to keep us cool.  The entire day was a day that we will always remember.  We had such a wonderful time together. We love Kindergarten field trips!!
