February Fun!

We have had a wonderful few weeks in Kindergarten!  Last week, we had a very special visitor come to our school. Our PTSO was so kind to invite a real author to come visit us at South Elementary School!  We loved meeting Jena Ball.  She read part of her book The Not Perfect Hat Club to us in the gym.  She also met with our class and did a fun activity with us.  We made cool dog hats and got inducted into the Not Perfect Hat Club.  It was so exciting to meet a real author!

We have been working really hard during Daily 5.  Mrs. Deaton's Book Club groups are reading harder and harder books together. She is super proud of how well we are doing!  In Working with Words, we are building words and sentences, practicing our sight words and writing stories about our friends in our classroom.  We loved walking around the room scanning QR codes and writing the sight words that show up on the iPad. During our writing group, Mrs. Feller works hard with us on writing sentences with capital letters and periods.  She teaches us to use sparkle words in our sentences. We use our iPads during Daily 5 to play iStation reading, Footsteps to Brilliance and Raz-Kids.

During math, we have worked really hard learning our 3D shapes. We have played 3D Shape Concentration, played 3D Shape Chutes and Ladders and manipulated shape magnets to make 3D shapes. In Math Club, we have practiced naming, describing and drawing 3D shapes.  We know how many faces, vertices and edges a sphere, cone, cylinder and cube have.

In Work Centers this week we have done a lot of things about groundhogs.  We made a groundhog craft, measured and compared the length of groundhogs, ordered groundhogs by size from shortest to tallest and used pattern blocks to build a groundhog face. In journal writing, we have been writing about groundhogs.

We predicted what we thought the groundhog would see when he came out of his burrow on February 2nd. These students wanted the groundhog to see his shadow because they wanted 6 more weeks of Winter:
Zach
Aaliyah
Maddie M.
Carter
Patrick
Olive
Shayla
Jason
Iker

These students did NOT want the groundhog to see his shadow because they are ready for Spring:
Sophie
Tenley
Summer
Juelz
Leia
Olivia
Treasure
Maddie G.
Bryant
Myah
Ahmir
Holden
Persea

The results were.... THE GROUNDHOG DID SEE HIS SHADOW!! There will be 6 more weeks of Winter!

Wednesday was Olive's 6th birthday.  Her mom and dad joined us for lunch and had a special activity for us to do afterwards.  Olive's mommy has an awesome cookie business called The Sweet Elements.  She made us some wonderful cookies and put food coloring paint in the corners of the cookies.  We got to use a paintbrush to paint our cookie and then we got to eat it.  It was tons of fun and delicious!  Thank you so much to Mrs. Dishno for bringing us the treats.

Today, Friday, February 3 is National Wear Red Day.  Our class is supporting patients with heart disease by wearing red.  We talked about ways to take care of our heart.  We look great in red!
