Daily 5 and St. Patrick's Day

We have been working very hard lately in Daily 5.  We are getting much better with our reading skills.  We are practicing our sight words and tapping other words every single day in school.  We are working on hearing all the sounds in words too!  We also are reading lots and lots of books!  Mrs. Deaton and Mrs. Feller are very proud of how hard we work in Literacy.  We have been doing iStation on the computer, practicing with our words and sentences in Working with Words, practicing our writing skills with Mrs. Feller, reading on Raz-Kids and playing fun literacy games on the iPads and working on our reading with Mrs. Deaton.  Here are some pictures of our hard work last week:

We did not have time to write a blog about St. Patrick's Day.  We have been very busy in school.  Now we want to write about the silly things that happened on that day.  St. Patrick's day started out really well.  Most of us wore the color green to school.  If we didn't have green on, Mrs. Deaton gave us a green shamrock to wear on our shirts.  We didn't want anyone to pinch us!  While we were in Specials (Music), Mrs. Feller was in the library and Mrs. Deaton was in a meeting, you will not believe what happened.  A sneaky little leprechaun came into our classroom and messed it up!  He put green toys all over the place and even turned our potty green!  He left his tiny footprints everywhere because he stepped in some green paint. He stepped on our work and on our sticker cards. That leprechaun also knocked over chairs and turned over our pencil boxes.  We guess he was looking for his gold.  We surely didn't have it!  The leprechaun left the room and WE had to clean it up!  It was crazy!  When we came back from Music, we found the mess and were totally shocked!  Mrs. Deaton almost cried because she does NOT like messes very much.  It was a silly, crazy day in Kindergarten.  Here are some pictures that we took:

Read Across America

Last week we celebrated Read Across America week.  We talked about Dr. Seuss and learned a lot of things about his books.  We learned about Dr. Seuss' real name and the name he uses when he writes and illustrates his stories.  We had a very busy week in school even though we didn't come on Friday.  We were out on Friday because of the ice storm.  Here are some things we did throughout the week:

We got to wear hats and silly socks last week.  Also, we came to school dressed very tacky.  We all looked so silly together, even Mrs. Deaton and Mrs. Feller.  We even got to watch Horton Hears a Who!

In math, we learned a lot about subtraction.  Mrs. Deaton helped us practice our subtraction in Math Club.  It was a lot of fun because we got to use small dry erase boards for the problems.  Also, we had a lot of fun math centers.  We put pattern block shapes on Horton the elephant.  We sorted fish by color and graphed the number of each color.  We also sorted Cat in the Hat's by size.  We put them in order from shortest to tallest.

We worked hard during Daily 5 last week too.  We did iStation on the computers, Raz-Kids on the iPads, worked with Mrs. Deaton in Book Club and worked with Mrs. Feller in Writing.  We also got to do a lot of fun things in Working with Words.  We practiced our sight words and other things in those tubs.  Some kids get to work with Mrs. Farrow at her table. Fun! We practiced our sight words on the SmartBoard, too.  We jumped up every time we read a new word.

One thing we loved last week was having Mystery Readers.  We didn't know who the readers were going to be.  Mrs. Deaton gave us clues and we got to guess.  Then, the Mystery Reader came into our classroom and read to us.  We thought this was awesome.

Work centers were great last week too.  All of our Work Centers were about the Cat in the Hat.  We made the Cat in an art center.  We wrote silly sentences on green eggs and ham ("The duck drove the truck.").  We match opposite words, like "boy" and "girl" or "soft" and "hard".  We also sorted our pictures by the ending sounds.

On Thursday, we had a very special group of Mystery Readers come into our classroom.  We got to buddy read with Mrs. Micklow's 2nd grade class.  Mrs. Micklow is Caroline's mommy.  Adriyana's sister, Amani, is in Mrs. Micklow's class.  We all got to pair up with a 2nd grader to read.  They read to us and we read to them!  It was really fun.

One more fun thing about last week... (Mrs. Deaton forgot to take a picture...OOPS).  We got to Skype with a Kindergarten class in New Jersey.  We talked to this class about the weather and about Dr. Seuss week.  We also talked about things we are learning in Math.  We shared some very fun youtube video's with that class.  Mrs. Deaton said that we can Skype with them again another day.  It was cool to meet some kids from another state!
