First Few Weeks!

We have had an extremely busy few weeks in Kindergarten.  We are learning a lot and enjoying our time with our new friends in school.  Here's what our typical day looks like so far:

When we come in first thing in the morning, we unpack our backpacks and put our folder in the basket.  We make our lunch choice on the Smartboard and get started on our morning work. Sometimes, we have fun morning tubs to do while we wait on all of our friends to arrive.

When the bell rings, we gather at the rug for Morning Meeting and Calendar.  We sing lots of fun songs about our seasons, months of the year and days of the week. We talk about how many days we have been in school and what the weather for the day is. We have time to turn and talk to each other about things in our lives. For example, we got to talk about what kinds of things in our lives make us happy.  Morning Meeting is a great way to start our day together.

After Morning Meeting is over, we travel to the magical world of Letterland.  We have flown, swam and even driven a race car to our imaginary world where all the letters in the alphabet live. When we get to Letterland, we learn all about different Letterlander characters.  We know what sound they make and some words that they begin.  Letterland is awesome!

The next thing we do is Daily 5. This is our Literacy part of the day. Right now, we have been working extremely hard to build our stamina for the Read to Self part of Daily 5.  Each day, we practice reading as long as we can without getting distracted.  We sit anywhere we want in the classroom and read our books without stopping and without getting up.  We know we can read the pictures, find words that we know or even read all of the words in the book.  The first day that we practiced Read to Self, we only made it 4 minutes before getting distracted.  Now, we are up to 18 minutes! Our goal is 20 minutes so we are almost there!! We are building our stamina and getting smarter along the way!

Mrs. Deaton taught us another part to Daily 5 this week. We learned all about Working with Words.  This is when we get to manipulate letters, words and sentences.  This week, we got to pinch punch letters that we can tape in our windows at home. This was a lot of fun! Mrs. Deaton said that we are going to learn more about the other parts of Daily 5 soon!

After Daily 5, we do Work Centers. Every day we do a different Work Center. This is when we get to cut, glue and do a lot of fun things!  We have been working really hard on writing our name the right way (starting with a capital letter and all the other letters lowercase).  Our work centers have been fun to do.

After Work Centers, we have snack and then go to our Special for the day.  We really enjoy Art, Music, PE, Guidance and Media.  During our Rosetta Stone Special, we have been exercising with GoNoodle on the Smartboard. Rosetta Stone isn't quite ready for us to use yet.

When we come back from Specials, we have Math.  We have been talking about measurable attributes.  We measured ourselves with string and compared our height to our friends in the classroom.  We found other things in our classroom that are shorter and taller than us. Learning about shorter, taller, bigger, smaller, lighter and heavier was great!

We found something shorter than us!

In math, we have also been working hard on sorting objects in different ways.  We learned that we can sort by color, shape, size and type.  We used the Smartboard and our pocket chart to sort objects and even got to work with partners to sort toys in different ways. The best activity was when we got to sort skittles by color.  Then, we got to eat them!! Yummy!

After math, we go to lunch and recess together.  Recess is one of our favorite parts of the day! We get to play with friends from all other classrooms in Kindergarten.  We are learning the rules on the playground and know it is important to follow the rules so we all stay safe! Recess is great!

When we come back in from recess, Mrs. Deaton always reads us a story.  We also sometimes get to watch a book from Bookflix on the Smartboard.  We have been talking about the different parts of a book.  We know all about the front cover, back cover, spine, title, author and illustrator.  After we read a story together, Mrs. Deaton models writing on her big paper.  She draws a picture and writes a sentence about it.  Then, we go to our seats and do journal writing.  We draw our own picture and write our own words in our journals. It is hard to do right now because we don't all know our letters, sounds and words very well.  We will get better the more we practice!

After Journal Writing, we get to play in Free Centers in the classroom.  We love to play in Housekeeping, Blocks, Play Dough, Puzzles and Games and Art.  During this part of the day, we are really working on being respectful, sharing and getting along with the other students in our room.  Sometimes sharing is hard to do but we are getting better at it every single day!  We have a great time playing with our friends in school.

The last thing we do in school is pack up our backpacks and having a closing circle time together.  We get to sing songs like Tootie Ta and Rules Rap before we line up to go home.  Kindergarten is a lot of work and is exhausting but it is SO MUCH FUN!  We love Kindergarten!
