October Fun

October has be filled with fun in Kindergarten!  Here are some of our highlights from the month...

Our Literacy Block during school is going so well.  We have worked hard during our Book Club groups with Mrs. Deaton and are reading hard books, decoding harder words and using our strategies to figure out the words we don't know.  In Writing with Ms. Reynolds, we are working on creating simple sentences, putting spaces between our words and using our sounds to spell the words.  In Word Work, we have done some fun activities to practice our sight words.  One of our favorite things to do is use the dot painter to build the word and find the word on our paper.  Sight Words are making us smarter!! We also get to use our iPads during Literacy so we can do iStation or Raz-Kids. Using our iPad to help us learn is so great!

Free Centers is always a favorite of ours!  We love to learn through playing with our friends.  In Mrs. Deaton's class, we can play in Blocks, Housekeeping, Puzzles & Games, Play Dough and the Art Center.  Sometimes, we get to play free choice on our iPads.  Free Centers are the best!

Checking out new Library Books is something else we love to do!  We get to pick out any book that we want (from a few different shelves of books) to take home to read with our families.  Before we go back to class, Mrs. Deaton lets us read our new books in the library.  We love the couch and special chairs that we get to read on!

Traveling to Letterland, practicing new letters and building words is another thing we have worked so hard on this month.  We are practicing writing the letters correctly on the lines, which is challenging sometimes! The more we practice, the better we get!

We celebrated how to "be a buddy, not a bully" by wearing orange to school one day.  We learned all about how to be an "upstander", how to always be kind and respectful to other people and how to be a buddy to everyone.  We wrote how we can be a buddy, not a bully on an orange strip of paper and then created a class chain with them.  We pledged to always be a buddy to others and never a bully!

South Elementary School's Fall Fair was incredible!  We got to dress up in our Halloween costumes and come to school at night!  We played carnival games, ate lots of delicious food, jumped in bounce houses and more!  Everyone who came had a blast!

To celebrate Fall and conclude our Farm unit, we made a cute scarecrow!!

We had an exciting Pumpkin Science Day in Kindergarten where we got to rotate to different classrooms to participate in different science experiments.  We learned about force and motion and we practiced using our senses to observe matter. We observed a funny reaction that occurred when ingredients were added together inside a plastic pumpkin.  We also predicted whether or not pumpkins sink or float and then got to test it to see who was right! Pumpkin Day was really fun!

One of the best things we did was carve a pumpkin as a class!  Before we carved it, we observed the pumpkin together.  We talked about what it looks like and what it feels like.  Then, we measured the circumference of the pumpkin using yarn and a yard stick and estimated how many seeds were inside.  Next, we carved the pumpkin together.  We all got a turn scooping out the pumpkin insides and then Mrs. Deaton carved a face.  She accidentally cut one of the teeth off... oops!! Finally, we put our seeds into cups by 10s, counted together and found out the actual number of seeds in our pumpkin! Can you believe it... there were 320 seeds in our pumpkin! Cambri estimated a number closest to that... she thought there was 300 seeds in the pumpkin.  We are so proud of her estimate!  Carving a pumpkin together was really fun!

Let's do this!!!

Only Mrs. Deaton can hold the sharp knife!

We have a new student, De'Shawn.  We were so excited he got to carve the pumpkin with us!

Yay Cambri for having the closest estimate!

We think the tooth fairy needs to pay this fella a visit!
Mrs. Deaton is roasting the pumpkin seeds with cinnamon and sugar so we can taste them tomorrow!!

October has been so much fun.  We are excited about Halloween and hoping the storms will stay away so we can Trick-or-Treat with our friends and family!!
