Baby Chicks!

We have some exciting things happening in Kindergarten!  We are hatching baby chicks! It takes a hen and a rooster to make a baby chick.  The hen lays the eggs and has to keep them warm.  We do not have a hen in our classroom.  That would be silly.  We have an incubator to keep our eggs warm.  The incubator also rotates the eggs.  That means it switches them around. We have a total of 42 eggs.

Here is what is happening inside the egg:
"The blood vessels carry the air to the chick." Myonna
"There are tiny holes in the egg for the air to get in." Wesley
"The chick eats the egg yolk." Aaron
"It takes 21 days for the chick to hatch." Paulina

Day 21 for our baby chicks will be on Monday.  Then this is what will happen:
"The chick has an egg tooth that cracks the egg to help it get out." Levi
"The egg tooth will fall off of the chick." Nick
"The chick will be exhausted and will need to take a nap after it hatches." Selena
"The feathers on the chick are called down. It will be wet when the chick comes out." Jatzibe
"We will get to hold the chicks." William

Yesterday we looked inside the eggs using a light.  We labeled the eggs with a marker. We put a D for "dud" on the eggs that we think are empty.  We put a * (star) on the eggs that we think have a baby chick in them.  We put a double star on one egg because we saw the baby chick moving a lot inside of it.  We think he will be wild! We put a question mark on one of the eggs because we aren't sure what is going on inside of it.  We had a great time predicting what will happen next week!

We learned a word that is very hard!  We know a word that means "animals that come out of eggs."  The word is OVIPAROUS!  Did you know that word?

We can't wait until next week!  We will blog again to let you know how many chicks we have.  Yay!

Maps

We are talking about Maps in Kindergarten this week.  We are learning all about where we are on the map.

Monday we talked about our house.  We looked on Google Earth to see what our houses look like.  We looked at them from the Front View and from the Bird’s Eye View.

During journals, we drew and wrote about the Bird’s Eye View of our bedroom.  We think it is strange looking at our bedroom from up above.  All of the things in our bedroom look like shapes from a Bird’s Eye View.

On Tuesday, we talked about our city.  We live in the city of Mooresville.  There are a lot of things in our city. We have churches, banks, a hospital, schools, fire houses, a police station, gas stations, houses and many other things in Mooresville.

We looked at our school on Google Earth. It was cool to see what the Kindergarten building looks like from up above. We drew a map of our classroom and put an X where we sit.  Then, we drew how we walk from the door to our seat and from our seat  to the bathroom.

In journals, we drew a road map and a key for it.

Today, we talked about our state.  We live in North Carolina.  Here are some interesting facts we learned about North Carolina:
“We have beaches and mountains in North Carolina.” Gracie
“Our state drink is milk.” Nick
“Our state bird is the cardinal.” Levi
“The biggest city in North Carolina is Charlotte.” Wesley
“Our state sport is Nascar.” Joshua
“Our state insect is the honey bee.” Josh
“Our capital is Raleigh.” Jatzibe

We are having a great week learning all about maps.  We will talk about our country, our continent and our planet tomorrow and Friday.  We can’t wait!
